7 Fun Facts About Singapore Rugby 7s 2018

April 23 venue of the singapore rugby 7s

The kick-offs for one of the most exciting and fast-paced games have begun.

Come 28 and 29 April 2018, Singapore will be set to rock, ruck, and rumble, as the HSBC Rugby 7s rolls into town. Sixteen teams from across the globe will flock to Singapore for this event, along with rugby fanatics.

For the uninitiated, Rugby 7s is played on a full-size pitch by teams of seven players. Unlike a 15s rugby game that lasts for 80 minutes, Rugby 7s is fast and furious! Each half only lasts seven minutes during the pool stages of an official Rugby Sevens tournament, while the finals will feature ten-minute halves.

Whether or not you are a rugby player, fan, or rookie, Rugby 7s promises an action-packed, adrenaline-pumping experience.

Here are 7 facts about the HSBC Singapore Rugby 7s that you need to know.

1. 6 Weeks of Family-Friendly Fun

Singapore 7s, which has positioned itself as “the families’ sevens,” has pulled out all the stops to make this a family-friendly and inclusive affair.

There will be plenty of things to do for families visiting Singapore at the six-week-long Singapore Rugby Carnival, which will have three fun zones for sport lovers of all ages: Sports Zone, with activities across different sports; Kids Zone, boasting fun and entertainment for children; and World Zone, which promises a variety of food and drink options.

Rugby-themed roadshows and activations will also be popping up at various malls, so you will not miss out on the action even if you’re not catching the games. Here, you may learn how it’s like to score a try, “hook” a ball, or tackle an opponent.

For the first time, families will be able to hop onto a “family fast track lane” at the stadium’s entrances. Parents can also take advantage of other amenities such as a child drop-off zone, private breastfeeding areas, and nappy changing rooms.

2. Glimpse the Rising Stars of Singapore Rugby

To catch the rising stars of rugby, don’t miss out on the three ancillary competitions in the lead-up to the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens. The first is the Regional Midnight Club 10s featuring eight men’s and eight women’s teams from rugby clubs across Asia on 27 April 2018 at Turf City.

Twelve teams in the under-14 age group will also be battling it out for an opportunity to play on the biggest stage of all in the annual Singapore Schools Sevens Series.

The top two teams will have a final face-off at the National Stadium on 29 April. Last year, St. Andrew’s Secondary School and Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) made it to the finals, with St. Andrew’s winning the match 12-10.

A new addition to the fringe activities this year is the Titans Ruck & Rumble 10s. Watch young ones make their rugby moves, with tournaments for under-8s and under-10s boys, and a girls’ competition to boot. The finalist teams will get their moment of glory at the National Stadium on 29 April 2018.

3. Rub Shoulders with Rugby Legends

Like other professional sports, every rugby fan has his or her favourites. Many are familiar with the fearsome All Blacks from New Zealand, or the mighty Springboks from South Africa – popularised by the movie Invictus featuring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela.

As the eighth stop for the 10-leg HSBC Sevens World Rugby series, Singapore will be hosting the top 16 teams in the world, who will compete for this year’s championship.

You might even sneak a glimpse of (or snap a wefie with) this year’s ambassadors, long-serving New Zealand Sevens captain DJ Forbes, and former England Rugby Sevens player Ben Gollings, a lead scorer in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Gollings’ record of 2,652 points came from playing 344 matches over 70 tournaments!

For this year, event organisers have set their sights even higher. They are aiming for 60,000 fans to grace this year’s tournament, making it one of the most well-attended sports events thus far.

From courageous tries and skillful passes to opportunistic tries and gravity-defying conversions, teams will battle it out on the field cheered by their supporters, Be part of the heart-pumping action and don your favourite team colours.

The Sports Hub has hosted the Singapore leg of the series since 2016, with the four-year contract set to end in 2019. The Singapore Rugby Union has since submitted a bid to extend the contract till 2023, along with 19 other cities, including Dubai, London, Vancouver, and Sydney.

Mr David Lim, Chairman of Rugby Singapore, believes that the new initiatives this year, such as an enhanced food experience, more fringe events, and increased ticket value featuring more deals with restaurants and merchants, will improve the Republic’s chances.

He said in an interview with The Straits Times, “We want to demonstrate to World Rugby and stakeholders that Singapore should be a temple of the Series.”

As rugby fans ourselves, we are gunning for Singapore to succeed.
